CAMPBELLSPORT – Alex Mueller singled home Quinn Comerford in the top of the sixth inning with what proved to be the winning run as Xavier topped Campbellsport 5-4 in a WIAA Division 2 baseball regional semifinal Wednesday at Campbellsport High School.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the sixth, the Hawks rallied to pull ahead. Comerford knocked in Matthew Potter and Gavin Wiese with a two-out single. After Frankie Cavaiani was hit by a pitch to extend the inning and move Comerford into scoring position, Mueller delivered with a hit to center to put Xavier ahead. Cavaiani was thrown out going to third, but the damage was done.
Wiese, Xavier’s starting pitcher, got the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning before a walk and a single knocked him out. He was replaced by Kyler Bleck, who retired the next batter to end the threat.
In the seventh, an error and a walk put two Cougars on base again. After a strikeout, Comerford replaced Bleck on the mound and gave up a single, loading the bases, but a fly out to Mueller in right finished off the win and extended the Hawks’ season.
The No. 6 seed Xavier (14-12) will play a Division 2 regional final at No. 2 seed Waupun (19-7) at 5 p.m. Thursday. The winner moves on to sectionals Tuesday at Waupaca.
Wiese went 3-for-4, which included an RBI single in the first inning, and Potter had two hits for Xavier.
