Waupun holds on to defeat Xavier in WIAA Division 2 baseball regional final

WAUPUN – A late Xavier rally fell short as the Hawks’ postseason run came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Waupun in a WIAA Division 2 baseball regional final Thursday at Thompson Field.

The Hawks trailed by a run when Reed Flick doubled on his fourth hit of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh. After a walk to Matthew Potter, Chase Beahm coaxed a fly ball to center to end the game and save the win for Logan Prall.

Prall struck out six over six innings to pick up the win for the Warriors (20-7), who move on to a Division 2 sectional at Waupaca High School on Tuesday.

Waupun will play Kewaskum in the second sectional semifinal Tuesday. Seymour will play Little Chute in the first game at 10 a.m., with the winners playing for a berth in the WIAA State Baseball Tournament in Appleton at approximately 4 p.m.

Waupun led 3-0 before Xavier (14-13) got on the board in the sixth. Gavin Wiese and an RBI single and Easton Stempa knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to bring the Hawks to within one. After a hit batter, a strikeout by Prall ended the threat, before Beahm finished off the win.

Kyler Bleck went the distance on the mound for Xavier, giving up seven hits and three walks in six innings.
