DE PERE – The Appleton Doubledays Legion baseball team finally got back on the field, playing for the first time in nearly a week, and picked up a bizarre 6-5 win over De Pere on Wednesday night.
The Doubledays had just one hit, but used nine walks, five hit batters and two errors to put across enough runs to pull out the victory and improve to 2-0 this summer.
Appleton scored four times in the opening inning. A leadoff walk was followed by the Doubledays’ only hit, a single by A.J. Thompson. Three hit batters and two more walks led to a four-run inning and Appleton led the rest of the way.
De Pere scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to get to within a run before Jack Schlueter was able to strand two runners on the base to end the game and earn a three-inning save.
Brandon Tobak picked up the win, giving up three runs in two innings. Matt Bixler followed with two shutout innings and Schlueter finished up, striking out four over the final three frames for Appleton.
The Doubledays will play at the three-day Wisconsin Rapids Tournament from Friday through Sunday, opening with a game against Menomonie at 5 p.m. Friday.
