Appleton Post 38 Legion baseball wins twice at Black River Falls Tournament

BLACK RIVER FALLS – The Appleton Post 38 American Legion baseball team earned a pair of wins on the second day of the Black River Falls Post 200 Tournament on Saturday, defeating Black River Falls 9-8 and Elk Mound 11-3 to improve to 3-0 in the three-day tournament.

In the first game of the day against Black River Falls, Appleton scored six times in the third inning to go up 7-3, before the host team tied the score at 8-8 with a four-run fifth.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, Appleton won it as Mason Peterson had a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Jacob Quella with the winning run.

Logan Gross had three hits and three RBI, and Reed Flick, Owen Wick and Kellen Gilbert each had two hits for Appleton.

Post 38 scored in each of its five at-bats against Elk Mound to win going away.

Jack Kangas picked up the pitching win, giving up two runs over four innings with six strikeouts. He also went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Appleton.

Logan Hudson, Michael Gwiazdon, Quell and Peterson each collected two RBI in the win.

Appleton Post 38 (5-5) finishes off the tournament with a game against Prairie du Chien at 9 a.m. Sunday.
