OSHKOSH – Brooke Schuh made a free throw with five seconds left in overtime to lift the Appleton North girls basketball team to a 60-59 win over Oshkosh West in a Fox Valley Association matchup Tuesday at Oshkosh West High School.
Avery Werfal, who finished with 20 points, hit a 3-pointer early in overtime for the Lightning and the teams traded baskets until Schuh grabbed a rebound with about eight seconds left and drove down court before being fouled. She made one of two free throws to put North up 60-59 before West drew a foul with 1.5 seconds to go with a chance to win the game at the free throw line. However, the player missed both free throws, giving the Lightning the victory.
Tay Maass also added 20 points, Sophie Busch scored eight, Schuh had five, and Ava Koleske and Addy Campbell each had four for the Lightning (11-5, 7-5 Fox Valley Association).
Oshkosh West drops to 7-9 and 4-7 in conference play.
Appleton North is back in action Friday at home against Kaukauna.
