Appleton East girls basketball overcomes big deficit to take down Appleton North

APPLETON – The Appleton East girls basketball team roared back from an early double-digit deficit and defeated crosstown rival Appleton North 46-43 in a Fox Valley Association game Tuesday at East High School.

North pulled out to a commanding 19-4 lead early before East used an 11-7 run to stay within 11 going into halftime.

The Patriots used a strong defensive performance in the second frame, holding North to just seven field goals and 17 points, while putting in 31 on the strength of eight points from Ella Jazdzewski and two 3-pointers by Ella Sweeney to pull out the win and keep their FVA title hopes alive.

Jazdzewski led East with 12 points, Sweeney added and Ambria Fischer kicked in nine.

Avery Werfal had 12 points for the Lightning, but just two after halftime as East’s defense clamped down.

Appleton East is now 19-3 overall and 15-2 in the FVA, one game behind Kimberly for first place in the conference. In order to grab a tie for the conference championship, East will have to have Neenah upend Kimberly on Thursday and then defeat Appleton West on its home court Friday in the FVA finale for both teams.

Appleton North drops to 15-8 and 10-7 in the FVA, and will finish its regular season at Fond du Lac on Thursday.
