Appleton East girls basketball rolls past Appleton West, Sheboygan North to capture Division 1 regional title

APPLETON – The Appleton East girls basketball team are heading back to sectionals after winning a pair of WIAA regional games at home on Friday and Saturday.

The Patriots rolled past Appleton West 66-36 on Friday and defeated Sheboygan North 55-37 on Saturday to advance in the WIAA playoffs.

The No. 2 seed Appleton East (23-3) will take on No. 3 Hartford (20-6) in a Division 1 sectional semifinal Thursday at Beaver Dam High School. No. 1 Pewaukee (22-4) will play No. 5 Neenah (19-7) in the other semifinal, with the winners meeting for the sectional championship and a berth in next week’s state tournament on Saturday, March 7, at Manitowoc.

The Patriots jumped out to a commanding 19-point lead by halftime of Friday’s game against Appleton West and went on to finish off the win.

Ten different East players scored in the victory, with Ella Sweeney leading the way with five 3-pointers and 25 points. The Patriots made 11 3-pointers overall.

Allysen Buss had 11 points for Appleton West, which finishes its season with a 2-24 record.

The Patriots continued their hot outside shooting in Saturday’s win over Sheboygan North, again knocking down 11 3s with Sweeney hitting five more on her way to a game-high 21 points, and Jenna Ott drilling three.
