Appleton North earns 11 state berths at WIAA Division 1 girls swimming sectional

NEENAH – The Appleton North girls swim team qualified three relay teams and swimmers in eight slots for the state meet at a WIAA Division 1 sectional Saturday at Neenah Middle School.
Each event winner and the next 18 best times across the six Division 1 sectionals qualify for the 2025 WIAA State Girls Swimming Championships at Waukesha South High School. The Division 2 meet will be held Friday, Nov. 14, and the Division 1 meet will be on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Appleton East/Hortonville/Kaukauna freshman Sydney Josephson also qualified in two events as she placed second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.62 seconds and third in the 100 butterfly in 54.06 seconds.
Appleton North’s 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Lauren Barnes, and sophomores Maddie Loken, Elise Brazzale and Aeryn Weber won in 1:45.98, and those four, among others, will represent the Lightning at the D-1 state meet.
Sophomore Sophia Golub, Barnes, Weber and senior Afton Scoresby won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.01, and Golub, Scoresby, Loken and Brazzale were first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.85 as well for the Lightning.
Individually, Loken won the 200 individual medley in 2:08.20 with Brazzale taking second in 2:08.70; Scoresby won the 50 freestyle in 24.02 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.01 seconds; Brazzale was second in the 100 butterfly (56.15), Loken won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.64); Golub was third in the 100 freestyle (54.06), and Barnes was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (58.23) to also earn state meet berths for Appleton North.
