MARSHFIELD – No. 3 seed Marshfield overcame an unusual number of turnovers with an efficient shooting game, steadily built a big lead and went on to defeat No. 14 Appleton West 68-47 in a WIAA Division 1 boys basketball regional semifinal Friday night at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers committed 14 turnovers, but forced 15 from West and shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor to pull away and advance.
Marshfield (20-5) will host No. 11 seed Wausau West (11-14), a 49-37 winner at No. 6 Superior on Friday, in a D-1 regional final Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tigers are seeking their fourth-straight trip to sectionals.
Appleton West finishes its season with an 8-17 record.
Appleton West grabbed its only lead early at 3-2 on a 3-pointer by Dylan Voster, before Marshfield went on a 9-2 run and never trailed again.
Seniors Chris Pohl and Valin Ramberg combined for all nine points in the run, and the duo proved fairly unstoppable all game long.
West hung around as Reid Hinkens and Jake Van Straten hit 3-pointers, making it 15-11, before Marshfield ripped off 10 points in a row – six by Pohl and four from junior guard Camden Kolstad – and went ahead 25-11.
A late 3 from Hinkens cut Marshfield’s lead to 27-18 at halftime, and the Terrors came as close as six at 34-28 following a three-point play by Braylon Ise before Marshfield put down the pedal.
Pohl had two three-point plays in a 12-3 push for the Tigers, and Ramberg scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the final nine minutes as Marshfield won going away.
Pohl added 22 points and seven rebounds, and Kolstad had 15 points as neither missed a two-point attempt in the victory. Until late baskets by Will Ketterer and Trevyn Freis in the final minute, Ramberg, Pohl and Kolstad accounted for all of the Tigers’ points.
Hinkens had 16 points and seven rebounds, and Ise finished with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Terrors.
