STEVENS POINT – The Appleton Doubledays used a late rally to knocked off De Pere 4-3 on Friday night at the Class AAA Wisconsin State American Legion Baseball Tournament at Bukolt Park.
The Doubledays (18-4) stand one win away from a trip to the Great Lakes Regional in Carol Stream, Ill., as they will take on Middleton (20-5) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The winner plays De Pere (23-9-1) for the state championship at 3:30 p.m. De Pere has already secured a spot in the national regional tournament, which will be held Aug. 6-10.
Middleton handed Appleton its only loss of the tournament 4-3 on Wednesday.
Down to its last at-bat and trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Appleton’s Ethan Winkler led off with a single and Dawsen Burington walked. After a line out and a fly out, Winkler scored on a balk to tie the game and Dan Dieck followed with a single to plate Burington to give the Doubledays the lead.
Appleton pitcher Cade Prestigiacomo walked the first two hitters in the bottom of the seventh before garnering a strikeout. He was then lifted for Jacob Bickel, who got the final two outs to end it.
Prestigiacomo struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings, giving up three unearned runs and just four hits.
Dieck had three of Appleton’s seven hits in the victory.
