APPLETON – Held to just one hit through seven innings, Xavier put together three singles in a row to score the game’s only run and defeated Waupaca 1-0 in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Don Hawkins Field.
Waupaca’s Cory Ellenich and Xavier’s Gavin Wiese matched zeroes through seven innings.
Wiese put up another in the top of the eighth for the Hawks, before their offense finally got going in the bottom of the frame.
Frankie Cavainai led off with a single, Easton Stempa followed with another on a bunt, and Matthew Potter knocked in the winning run with a single to left to give Xavier its third win in a row.
Wiese struck out six and did not walk a batter in an eight-inning complete game as the Hawks move to 3-5 this spring.
Xavier will play a Bay Conference game at New London on Friday.
