APPLETON – Kyler Bleck and Gavin Wiese combined on a one-hit shutout as the Xavier baseball team rolled in its playoff opener, winning a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal over Two Rivers on Thursday at Don Hawkins Field.
The No. 6 seed Xavier (13-12) will play a D-2 regional semifinal at No. 3 Campbellsport (18-8) on Tuesday.
Xavier scored three times in the opening inning as Matthew Potter had a two-run double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wiese to give the Hawks a quick lead.
That would be more than enough as Bleck allowed one hit over five innings with seven strikeouts, and Wiese finished off the shutout, tossing a scoreless sixth.
Alex Mueller, Potter, Wiese and Quinn Comerford each had two hits for Xavier, which finished off the game via the 10-run rule with five runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
