Xavier girls basketball loses heartbreaker at Mosinee

MOSINEE – Mosinee outscored Xavier 7-1 in the final 30 seconds to earn an improbable 64-63 win in a nonconference girls basketball game Thursday night at Mosinee High School.

Xavier trailed 34-26 at halftime but rallied and pulled ahead 62-57 after a free throw by Annika Heimann with 52 seconds left before Mosinee mounted its comeback.

Paetyn Jirschele started the run with a banked-in 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, making it 62-60.

Hailey Hafner made one of two free throws for Xavier to up its lead to three before a wild sequence for Mosinee.

Addy Henrich was fouled after an offensive rebound with and made the first throw, missed the second, and Pacyn Stoffel rebounded for the Indians, scored and was a fouled to tie the game. She made the ensuing free throw with 9.5 seconds left to put Mosinee up 64-63.

Xavier called a timeout after crossing halfcourt with six seconds left, but could not get a shot attempt up before the buzzer sounded and saw its three-game winning streak stopped.

Brynn Krull had six 3-pointers and 28 points for Xavier, which falls to 16-5 this season.

Stoffel led Mosinee (13-4) with 21 points. The Indians have now won eight games in a row.

Xavier will have some time off before hosting New London on Friday, Feb. 13, the first of three Bay Conference home games to finish out the regular season.
