Comeback attempt falls just short as Xavier baseball drops home game to Notre Dame

APPLETON – A late comeback attempt fell a run short as the Xavier baseball team lost a nonconference game to Green Bay Notre Dame 8-7 on Monday at Don Hawkins Field.

Notre Dame (6-4) led 6-0 after two innings and 8-1 after 5½ innings before the Hawks got back in the game.

Frankie Cavaiani and Porter Meach had an RBI singles, Matt Potter walked with the bases loaded, Kyle Bleck knocked in two with a single and Potter scored on a groundout by Quinn Comerford to bring Xavier to within one at 8-7.

A strikeout ended the rally and Xavier went 3-up, 3-down in the seventh to fall a run short.

Gavin Wiese and Cavaiani each had two hits for Xavier, which drops to 4-5 this season.

Xavier will host New London for a Bay Conference series at Don Hawkins Field on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.
