PLYMOUTH – It had been more than two decades since Fox Valley Lutheran made its only appearance at the WIAA State Softball Tournament.

That changed Thursday as the Foxes downed Denmark 7-6 in a WIAA Division 2 sectional final at Gale Grahn Field.

Kinley Peterson had an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Tenkley Wolfrath doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to provide the difference for Fox Valley Lutheran (24-3).

FVL will play a Division 2 semifinal on Friday, June 12, at the WIAA State Softball Tournament at Goodman Diamond in Madison. Matchups and game times will be announced on Friday. The Foxes last made the state tournament in 2004, losing in the semifinals in their only state appearance.

The Foxes started strong, scoring twice in the first inning on a two-run single by Peterson.

Denmark (26-5) pulled ahead briefly in the top of the third as Shaelyn Kraschnewski doubled in a run and Maggie Frank drove in two with another double.

The lead didn’t last for long as the Foxes responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Madison Babcock singled in a run, Natalie Bromm scored on a wild pitch, and Wolfrath smacked a triple to put FVL up 5-3.

Denmark stayed in it with two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh, but the Foxes were able to hold on as Babcock finished off her complete game by getting a groundout with two runners on. Babcock finished with eight strikeouts.

Peterson ended up 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Bromm and Wolfrath each had two hits for FVL, which finished with 11 in all.
