Bay Port uses 12-run inning to blow past Appleton North baseball in WIAA Division 1 regional final

SUAMICO – The Appleton North baseball team had No. 1 seed Bay Port on the ropes early, but the Pirates used a 12-run fourth inning to pull away and win 17-6 in a WIAA Division 1 regional final on Thursday at Bay Port High School.
Matthew Hietpas and Teegan Karpinske had RBI singles, Nathan Ramus walked with the bases loaded and Aedan Waterstreet was hit by a pitch to force in another run in a four-run second inning as the Lightning took a 4-2 lead.
Bay Port came back with three runs in the bottom of the second on home runs by Ethan Orlando and Eli Hart, before North tied it in the third on another Karpinske RBI single and went ahead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Owen Reuland.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lightning’s pitching unraveled.
Hart tied the game with his second homer, and four North pitchers combined for six walks and six hit batters as the Pirates put the game out of reach.
Bay Port (23-3) moves on to a sectional semifinal against West De Pere on Tuesday at Sunset Park in Kimberly at 10 a.m. Kaukauna and Kimberly will play in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. with the two winners playing for the sectional title and a state tournament berth at 4 p.m.
Appleton North finishes its season with a 14-12 record, winning just four of its final 15 games.
