Manitowoc comes from behind to knock off Appleton Doubledays in Class AAA Legion baseball regional

KIMBERLY – The Appleton Doubledays’ season came to an end as they suffered a 6-3 loss to Manitowoc in an elimination game at a Class AAA American Legion baseball regional on Wednesday at Sunset Park.

Five Appleton errors led to four unearned runs as Manitowoc (16-7) came from behind to survive and move into a semifinal matchup with Neenah on Thursday. The winner of that game will play Kimberly for the regional title and a berth in next week’s state tournament in Marshfield.

Caden Laumer had a two-run single in the second inning and Noah Meyer singled and scored on a single by Mason Winkler in the third to give the Doubledays (6-9) an early 3-1 lead.

It did not hold, however, as Manitowoc scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game, and plated three in the sixth thanks to a pair of Appleton errors to pull ahead in the sixth.

Joe Shimek went the distance for Manitowoc, striking out six with just one walk.

Oscar Crownhart, Zander Martin and Jordan Sanders each had two hits for Appleton.
