Appleton Doubledays edge Appleton Post 38 in Legion baseball regular-season finale

APPLETON – The Appleton Doubledays used a five-run sixth inning to push past Appleton Post 38 9-7 in the final regular-season American Legion baseball game of the season for both teams on Sunday night at Don Hawkins Field.
As both teams are preparing for regionals that begin this week, the Doubledays used three pitchers and Post 38 had seven spread out the innings.
Post 38 led 4-3 after four innings before the Doubledays (12-3) scored once in the fifth and five times in the sixth to grab the lead.
Brady Kern allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh but got out of the frame with no further damage to save the win for Brandon Tobak for the Doubledays.
Dawsen Burington went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and T.J. Parker and Cade Prestigiacomo each added a pair of RBI in the win for the Doubledays.
Levi Watts had two hits and Jack Kangas drove in two runs for Post 38 (10-12).
Post 38 will open Class AAA regional play at Sunset Park in Kimberly against Kimberly on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Doubledays begin its Class AAA regional action Wednesday at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh against Sheboygan at 2:30 p.m.
The champions from both regionals will earn spots in next week’s Class AAA Wisconsin State American Legion Baseball Tournament at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point, which will be held July 29-Aug. 2.
