Appleton North’s Huenink ties for second, secures state berth at WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional

APPLETON – Appleton North senior Jonathan Huenink is heading to his first state meet after a second-place finish at a WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional on Monday at Butte des Morts Country Club.

Huenink shot a 4-over par 74 to finish in a tie for second place overall and was the first of the three individual state qualifiers at the meet that had 48 athletes competing.

The top two teams – Kimberly (307) and De Pere (310) – and the top three individuals not on the qualifying teams advance to the 2026 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison on June 8-9.

De Pere freshman Grant Lawton shot a 1-over par 71 to win the individual sectional title, with Huenink and Andrew Ostermann of Kimberly tying for second with 74s.

West De Pere junior Grant Parrett shot a 77 and Bay Port senior Connor Ness had a 78 to pick up the other two individual berths.

Huenink had a pair of birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to shoot an even-par 35. After two pars and a bogey on the 12^th, Huenink strung together four-straight pars. A bogey on No. 17 followed by a double-bogey on the last hole didn’t stop him from securing a spot at state for the first time.

Fox Valley Lutheran senior Kaden Kusserow saw his career end after he shot an 80 to tie for 10^th place and missed out on a playoff for the final individual state spot. Double bogeys on the 13^th and 16^th holes proved to be the difference in his round.

Appleton West qualified for the sectional as a team after placing fourth at last week’s regional at Winagamie Golf Course, and finished eighth with a score of 354.

Graham Goldschmidt shot an 84, Austin Arizola had an 88, Keaton Buss finished with a 90, Gavin Goodyear shot a 92, and Mason Peterson fired a 93 for the Terrors.

Division 1 play at the state meet begins at 7 a.m. Monday, June 8, and concludes with the second round tee times starting at noon on Tuesday, June 9.
