Appleton Post 38 Legion baseball splits doubleheader with Escanaba Cubs

APPLETON – The Appleton Post 38 Legion baseball team split a doubleheader against the Escanaba (Mich.) Cubs on Saturday at Don Hawkins Field.
Appleton won the first game 11-0 before suffering a 5-3 loss, moving to 10-11 this season.
Quinn Comerford (three innings) and Owen Wick (two innings) combined on a two-hit shutout in the opener for Appleton as each struck out four opposing batters.
Jack Kangas, Logan Hudson and Mason Peterson each drove in two runs in the victory.
In Game 2, Escanaba scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to pull ahead and earn the split of the twinbill.
Levi Watts had a double, a triple and scored a run, and Dimitry Edmunds and Comerford drove in runs for Appleton.
Post 38 finishes its regular-season schedule at home Sunday against the Appleton Doubledays. Game time is 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
Appleton Post 38 will begin play at the Class AAA regional at Sunset Park in Kimberly against Kimberly on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the double elimination, four-day tournament will qualify for the Wisconsin Class AAA American Legion State Tournament at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point, which will be held July 29-August 2.
