DE PERE – The No. 11 seed Appleton West opened its WIAA postseason with a big road upset, knocking off No. 6 De Pere 3-1 in a Division 1 baseball regional semifinal on Tuesday at De Pere High School.
Nick Downs scored on a passed ball and William Malnar had a sacrifice fly to plate Quinn Meyers in the Terrors’ two-run sixth inning to give them a 3-1 lead.
Appleton West starting pitcher Henry Ott retired the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth before giving up a single and a walk. Kellin Gilbert entered on the mound and walked the first batter to load the bases before retiring the next hitter on a fly out, then sent down De Pere in order in the seventh to pick up the save for Ott and send Appleton West on to the next round of the playoffs.
Ott gave up just the one run and three hits, while working around four walks to earn the pitching win for the Terrors.
The Terrors (4-22) will play at No. 3 seed Kaukauna (18-7) on Thursday with the winner advancing to next Tuesday’s sectional at Kimberly.
Meyers had two of Appleton West’s three hits.
