Fox Valley Lutheran softball holds off Luxemburg-Casco to win WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal

AppletonSportsPage.com

APPLETON – The Fox Valley Lutheran softball team stands one win away from its first state tournament appearance in more than two decades after withstanding Luxemburg-Casco 3-2 in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal Tuesday at Fox Valley Lutheran High School.

The No. 1 seeded Foxes (23-3) moves on to a sectional semifinal against another top seed and defending Division 2 state champion Denmark (25-4) on Thursday at Plymouth High School. FVL is shooting for its first state tournament berth since 2004, which is the only time the Foxes have advance to state.

The teams exchanged runs in the opening inning with FVL scoring right out of the shoot in the bottom of the frame when leadoff hitter Claire Pfrang tripled and came in on a sacrifice fly by Madison Babcock.

The Foxes went ahead for good with a two-run second inning thanks to two L-C errors and a squeeze bunt by Pfrang.

That lead held until the sixth when the Spartans pushed across on a sac fly by Riley Westlund, but Babcock, FVL’s pitcher, coaxed a groundout to end the frame and stranded two baserunners in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win. She finished with eight strikeouts and just one walk.

Tenley Wolfrath had two of Fox Valley Lutheran’s six hits in the victory.
