Hortonville tops Appleton North softball in eight innings

HORTONVILLE – Ivy Schroeder singled home the game’s only run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Hortonville a 1-0 win over Appleton North in a battle of Fox Valley Association softball leaders Friday at Commercial Club Park.
With the win, Hortonville (17-2 overall) takes firm control of first place in the FVA, improving to 12-1, 1½ games ahead of Appleton North (15-5, 11-3 FVA). Hortonville has three conference games remaining next week, with North playing two against Kimberly on Monday and Appleton East on Thursday.
Appleton North’s Charlotte Radtke and Hortonville’s Kierra Wunderlich were both locked in from the pitching circle, throwing shutouts through the regulation seven innings.
Hortonville finally got to Radtke, who struck out 15, in the eighth, knocking out three of its seven hits, the final one by Schroeder to drive in the winning run.
Claire Therkildsen had two of Appleton North’s four hits.
Appleton North hosts D.C. Everest for a nonconference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
